A wonderful children’s story, entertaining and heart-warming. The author describes an old house with a gardener/caretaker and a great-grand mother whom is excited about receiving her great grandson to stay.
The house has been lived in for centuries, and previous residents can come back for adventures.
The author describes a traditional Christmas, with a traditional church service, surrounded by English fields. It is a cultural history lesson as much as anything else.
What makes the book stand-out is that each of the characters (returning from the grave) have their own back story, and the reader years to read more. For instance, the story of Black Ferdie, a gypsy boy and his mother Petronella, and how he ended up in Botany Bay… Read on for more!
Below are some stencil drawings, as published in the original book, by Peter Boston, Lucy Boston’s son.
