A splendid novel, with more action than other Maigret novels.
This novel was such a success that it was the first of the Maigret’s stories to be filmed, directed by Jean Tarride, with Simenon himself doing the screenplay:

And what make this a special novel, is the breadth of canvas Simenon uses. A pasty yellow dog, a fishing village in Brittany, Sing Sing prison in New York, our detective from Paris, multiple causes of death. Or indeed, are there any deaths? Can we be certain?
Will Maigret’s conscience overcome his duty to Law and Order?
Will true love win out, or will the innocent be ruined?
Read on, dear reader and enjoy a special Maigret melee!
