An enjoyable ‘holiday’ read of a Constable investigating supernatural crimes. Loosely based on the old ‘Punch and Judy’ puppet shows, it is a fast paced dash through London. Each of the rivers of London has a protector or guardian, and they help our hero, Peter Grant as he searches for a ghostly murderer. For example, most prominent is Mother Thames and thereafter include Beverley Brook, Lady Ty, Oxley, Lea and mentions are given to the Effra, Ash, Brent and Crane.
It is written in the first person, which is maybe not as effective as using the third-person. There are numerous sequels, as well as a TV show that has been optioned, and many graphic novels available.
Some of the best scenes are when Peter is searching around London, and it would be interesting to visit London book in hand and explore the streets.
