Lisbon was one of Europe’s leading cities before the earthquake hit on 1st November 1755. The whole of Europe was shocked. The death count was enormous.

And would have been higher if not for the salvation of, Sebastiao Jose de Carvalho e Melo.

He had a plan, and convinced the King of Portugal to action his plan. Over the next few years he organized the rebuilding of Lisbon. Carvalho became the most important and powerful person in Portugal, after the King himself.

There are 20 black and white images in the center of the book showing the depiction of the earthquake by contemporary artists.
