Easter 1282 a rebellion broke out on the island of Sicily against the rules of the French overlords. Within a short period all the French on the island of Sicily had been massacred.
Runciman provides the background to this medieval blood lust. The Pope shares guilt for imposing unwelcome rulers onto the island. The effects of the Vespers are felt today, and Sicily is certainly treated differently to parts of the mainland, or to Sardinia for example.
